It’s not just the glimmer in their eyes that shines, nor is it just the smiles flashing on their faces. The rainbow flowing through the air is more than just a beautiful sight. Pride is both a celebration and a protest, as the LGBTQ+ community comes together in love and acceptance, raising their voices for equality.
When I asked Gaurav about his experience, he emphasized one thing: “I cherish being able to be my authentic self.” He truly valued seeing people from diverse backgrounds, of all ages, sexualities, and genders, uniting in solidarity. It was like witnessing every hue of the rainbow walking side by side, a space where discrimination had no place.
For the past five years, Gaurav has participated in the Pride march, and he has witnessed nothing but a peaceful and vibrant demonstration. The atmosphere is filled with love and acceptance. He expressed deep gratitude for the support and protection provided by the Delhi Police throughout the march.
Gaurav first joined Pride in 2018, the year when homosexuality was decriminalised in India. Since then, it has always been a joyous celebration. However, this year, there was also a sense of pain. The pain of rejection lingers, fueled by the denial of marriage equality by the honourable court, despite the decriminalisation of homosexuality.
This year, Gaurav strongly felt the significance of Pride. It served as a platform to assert their presence and their rights. They showed the world that they are not a minority but a powerful and vibrant community, standing tall in unity.
One thing that felt somewhat peculiar to both was the chanting of “Jai Bhim” slogans by some leaders. This slogan resonates with the Bahujan community and embodies Dr. B. R. Ambedkar’s ideology. Hearing this during the Pride march made us question whether the Pride movement was being politicized by a select few. We believe that while Pride should be inclusive and diverse, it should not be limited to any particular political ideology.
In conclusion, Pride is more than just a celebration; it is a day to assert the existence and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community. When given the opportunity, they can shine brighter than anyone else, illuminating the path towards a more inclusive and equal society.
